The top picture is of a Hubbard squash. I have always wondered how it got to be that color. I think it comes in other colors, but I am not sure.
The bottom picture is of a small pie pumpkin. These look like regular pumpkins, but they are a bit different. The texture is smoother and the taste is better for making pumpkin mash.
I will talk about the big orange pumpkins tomorrow.
Let’s say you, or in this case, a big person wants to make a pumpkin pie.
The Hubbard squash and small pie pumpkins make fine pies.
They have to be cut, the seeds taken out and heated to make the insides soft. Once the insides are soft, they can be scooped out and put into a big bowl. The insides are then mashed. Spices, sugar and other ingredients are added to give the mash. The mixture is poured into a pie crust and put into the oven to bake.
This is a complicated process and it’s best to stand back and watch someone do this.
I keep my feet, nose and toes away from anything that is hot.
After watching this rather long process, there is a piece of pumpkin pie at the end. It is worth the wait.
